If you are interested in becoming a police officer, you may be wondering where to start. Find out what qualifications you must meet, as well as how to succeed in the process below.

When And Where to Submit Applications
For the position of Police Officer the Dover Police Department will always accept applications. Although the department only runs testing occasionally to create eligibility lists, you can submit your application to our Training Unit at any time, and it will be kept on file until its eligibility expires.

The Dover Police Department will stop accepting applications for the 2020 hiring process on March 20, 2020.  All applications received after March 20, 2020 will be saved for the 2021 process.  Applicant testing for the 2020 hiring process will be held in April with dates, time, and location to be included in a letter sent to all applicants.

CIVILIAN CAREERS

Part-Time Police Cadet

(29 hours per week)

The primary duties will include Patrol of assigned areas in the Downtown Dover and the Dover Public Library area to enforce City of Dover Ordinances and to assist other police personnel as directed; assist in the administrative and operational goals of the department.  OFFICIAL DOVER POLICE CADET PROGRAM

Job Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas in the Downtown Dover and Dover Public Library area to enforce City of Dover Ordinances
  • Process prisoners, including completing required paperwork and operation mug shot image computer
  • Issue summons to ordinances violators & completes arrest reports as needed
  • Assist other police personnel as directed
  • Assist administrative and operational goals of the department

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • In-depth background investigation
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
  • Physical fitness test

A criminal background investigation will be required. Candidates may be given a job-related test during the interview.

Full-Time Communications Operator (Police Dispatcher)

The City of Dover is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Communication Operator in the Police Department. This position is in the Police Departments’ 911 Communication Center. The primary duties of this position are to dispatch emergency services in response to calls for assistance.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for answering emergency services phones (911 phones)
  • Dispatching appropriate emergency services
  • Maintaining emergency reference materials
  • Obtaining service in event of equipment failure
  • Maintaining various logs, charts, and recordings to provide records of all emergency and non-emergency actions for follow-up investigative, administrative, or legal action
  • Monitors the building security system, including security cameras

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Three (3) months of related experience with operating computers and understand basic computer functions
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DELJIS certification
  • ability to remain calm in crisis situations is vital, handle high stress situations and multitask
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly, and deal tactfully with the public
  • Ability to work rotating shifts (currently 12-hour shifts))
  • Requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, and color perception as well as good physical and mental health
  • Experience in DELJIS and NCIC preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook preferred
  • Pro Q&A and Emergency Police Dispatching (EPD) preferred

A criminal background investigation will be required. A dispatching test will be required of all candidates. Psychological testing and a physical exam are pre-employment requirements
