Dover Police Increase DUI Patrols for Memorial Day Weekend
New Year’s Eve may get a bad rap when it comes to highway safety, but Memorial Day weekend doesn’t come far behind as one of the most dangerous times of the year to be on the road. The Dover Police Department will be increasing patrols targeting Driving Under the Influence Violations throughout the Memorial Day Weekend. According to research compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which tracks car crash statistics, drunk driving fatalities are highest during the weekends of Memorial Day, Labor Day and Fourth-of-July. NHTSA reports 397 deaths from car accidents over Memorial Day Weekend in 2010, and 40% of these were alcohol-related. As of May 13, 2014, the Dover Police Department has made 53 DUI related arrests in the 2014 calendar year. 164 total DUI related arrests were made in all of 2013. As the weather continues to get warmer and parties/BBQ’s become more prevalent, so do DUI’s. By increasing enforcement during peak times and dates, the Dover Police Department hopes to lessen the number of DUI related crashes and fatalities on Dover roadways.
