Dover PD Issues Advisory Regarding Recent Mail Thefts 7-23-2020

The City of Dover Police Department is issuing a public advisory regarding thefts from public post office collection boxes.  Within the last three weeks, the Dover Police Criminal Investigations Unit has received at least eight cases of thefts where subjects have removed mail from United States Postal Service mailboxes.  The suspects then remove any valuables from envelopes, including checks.  In many cases, the suspects have been able to alter or change the checks to receive money themselves, including one case for $40,000.  The Dover Police Department continues to investigate these incidents and is working with the United States Postal Inspection Service as well.  Two Dover locations have been confirmed as being targeted in the mail thefts:  the USPS Collection Box on Buckson Drive and another in the 1000 Block of S. Bradford Street.

The Dover Police Department is advising residents to use caution when sending mail and reminding them that the safest way to send mail is to drop it off at a post office location, such as 55 Loockerman Plaza in Dover, or at a location with high visibility and more vehicle/foot traffic.  Post office and collection box locations can be found at: https://tools.usps.com/find-location.htm
