UPDATE – July 17th, 2023 – The Dover Police Department has arrested Tyrone Kersey, 37, of Dover, for weapons and related charges stemming from the shooting on June 11th, 2023 on Sussex Avenue.
Detectives have determined that after the initial call for trespassing, Kersey engaged in a verbal argument with a 32-year-old female of Dover. Prior to police arrival, the dispute turned physical when Kersey pushed her to the ground.
As police arrived on the scene, Kersey produced a handgun and began shouting at Officers. Kersey refused to follow police commands to put the firearm down and get on the ground.
Instead, Kersey fired one shot from his firearm into a parked vehicle that was now occupied by the 32-year-old female and a 1-year-old child. Kersey then pulled the female from the vehicle while she was holding the child in her arms. Kersey continued to refuse commands from Officers and began pulling the victims toward a residence. During this movement, and due to the escalating threat to everyone present, Kersey was shot by police.
Kersey was treated on scene, transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus, and was later transferred to the Christiana Health System.
