Traffic Stop Nets 133 Bags of Heroin, Arrest of Dover Man 8-19-14

Narrative:
Officers with the Dover Police Department’s Safe Streets Unit arrested a Dover man with 133 bags of heroin during a traffic stop on Monday afternoon.  Safe Streets Officers stopped a black Jeep Cherokee in the area of North State Street/Lepore Road for a moving violation and the driver having a suspended license.  During the stop, the driver (Tony McClain) originally gave the officers his brothers name and personal information to the officers.  Officers were quickly able to determine that McClain was lying about the information he gave and was arrested for criminal impersonation.  A search of McClain led to the discovery of a large plastic bag containing heroin in the McClain’s pants.  A further search of the Jeep Cherokee led to the discovery of 3 additional bags of heroin on the side of the driver’s seat.  In total, 133 bags of heroin for a total weight of 1.995 grams was discovered, classifying the amount as a Tier 1 Quantity.

Dover Police ID Suspect in Sunday Afternoon Shooting 8-18-14

Location: 100 Block of South New Street, Dover, DE

Narrative: Dover Police are searching for Aaron Brown (34), of Dover, for the shooting of a man in broad daylight, late Sunday afternoon.  Police responded to the 100 block of South New Street for shots fired to find a 22-year-old victim shot in the leg in the area of South New Street and Reed Street.  The victim was uncooperative with officers investigating the shooting, however several witnesses in the area, along with video surveillance led to the identification of Brown as the suspect in the shooting.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Dover Police Department at 302-736-7111 or  call the Delaware Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 1-800-Tip-3333 or go online at www.tipsubmit.com.

Police Officer Suffers Injury After Being Assaulted During Response to Domestic Dispute 8-18-14

Narrative:
A Dover Police Officer was injured after responding to a domestic dispute on Saturday evening.  On Saturday, August 16th, at approximately 7:10PM, Dover Police responded to 56 South Governors Avenue for a reported domestic dispute between a 35 year old male and Elaina Smith (32).  Upon arrival, officers learned that Smith and the victim were involved in an argument when Smith exited the victim’s vehicle and broke a passenger side window out of it.  Smith then struck the victim with a closed fist, in the face.  A Dover Police Officer who arrived on scene, confronted Elaina Smith in an effort to take her into custody.  Smith then punched the officer in the face, possibly causing the officer to suffer a broken nose.  Smith’s actions were observed by the suspects children as well.  The Dover Police Officer was evaluated for his injuries at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital and released later in the evening.

Tier 2 Sex Offender Arrested on Five Counts of 4th Degree Rape 8-15-14

Narrative:
A 30-year-old Dover man was charged with 5 counts of 4th Degree Rape after it was discovered that he was having sexual relations with a 17-year-old female victim.  Matthew Campbell, a registered Tier 2 Sex offender, was processed and charged with the crimes at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, where he was incarcerated on a Violation of Probation.  Campbell was previously convicted in 2012 for having sexual relations with an underage female victim, leading to his Tier 2 Status.  Campbell will continue to be held at JTVCC and was issued $100,00 secured bond on these new charges.

Weekly Shoplifting Arrests 8/7-8/14

The Dover Police Department responded to 23 complaints of shoplifting at various retailers from August 7, 2014 through August 14th, 2014.  At the time of this release, 15 arrests were made, 8 are currently under investigation, and 1 was unfounded.  As depicted in the below image, 4 of the arrests involved juvenile suspects.  Next week’s arrests will be posted on Friday, August 22nd with arrests from August 14th through August 21st. Shoplifting Escalates to Robbery After Suspect Assaults Target Employee 8-15-14

Location: Target, 148 John Hunn Brown Road, Dover, DE

Narrative:
A Dover woman was charged with robbery and resisting arrest among other charges after stealing clothing items from the Dover target on Thursday night.  At approximately 9:35PM, officers responded to Target for a shoplifter that had assaulted a Target employee.  The investigation revealed that the suspect, Sonia Scott (36), concealed numerous clothing items in her purse and attempted to flee the store without purchasing the items.  When confronted by an employee, Scott shoved the employee numerous times, also causing minor lacerations to the victims arm and then fled the area.  Officers searching the area, found Scott in the area of Capital Green.  When officers attempted to take Scott into custody she resisted their efforts to take her into custody, but was arrested after a brief struggle with the officers.  During a search of the suspect, officers discovered a claw hammer hidden in the small of Scott’s back.    Scott was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 and is currently held on $6,500 secured bail at Baylor Women’s Correctional Facility.
