Original Narrative:

The Dover Police Street Crimes Unit, working with Delaware Probation and Parole, arrested a young Dover man with a handgun.  The team of officers contacted a group of subjects on the unit block of South New Street, who were loitering in front of a vacant residence.  During the investigation, Jalil Scott (17), was found to be in possession of a .380 Bersa Handgun and was taken into custody without incident.  Scott was charged with the following offenses:
-Carry Concealed Deadly Weapon
-Possession of Deadly Weapon by Person Prohibited
-Loitering

Armed Robbery at 7-11 7-24-15

Original Narrative:

The Dover Police Department is investigating an early morning robbery at a 7-11 store that occurred on Thursday, July 23rd.  At approximately 3:19AM, two black male suspects entered the store and displayed black handguns.  One of the suspects jumped the counter and removed an undisclosed amount of cash from the registers.  Both suspects then fled the store, headed in opposite directions on foot.

Arrest Made in July 13th Homicide 7-22-15

Original Narrative:

The Dover Police Department is investigating an early morning homicide of a 35-year-old man.  The incident occurred at approximately 2:17AM in the 900 block of West North Street.  Jamal Weeks, 35, was shot by an unknown suspect, and later died as a result of his injuries.  Detectives from the Dover Police Department have been interviewing potential witnesses and residents in the area and are working towards identifying a suspect.  This is the fifth homicide in the City of Dover in the 2015 calendar year.

Update:
The Dover Police Department has made an arrest in connection with the Simon Circle homicide that occurred on July 13th.  The arrest occurred on Monday afternoon, when Erick Morton (29) reported to the Dover Probation and Parole office for a routine check-in appointment.  Morton was taken into custody without incident and brought to the Dover Police Department for questioning and later charged with the murder of 35-year-old Jamal Weeks.  Morton is being held at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on the following charges:
-Murder 1st Degree
-Possession of Firearm During Commission of a Felony
-Possession of Firearm by Person Prohibited
-Possession of Ammo by Person Prohibited
-Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon

Capital Cleaners Burglary 7-20-15

Narrative:

The Dover Police Department is investigating a burglary that occurred during the weekend at Capital Cleaners, at 198 Commerce Way.  Sometime between Saturday, July 18th at 3:30PM and Sunday, July 20 at 4:15PM, an unknown suspect forced entry into the business and attempted to steal cash, but was unsuccessful.  The suspect(s) caused an estimated $800 in damage while forcing entry into the business.

Dover Police Department’s K9 Gunner Has Been Awarded a Bullet and Stab Protective Vest

The Dover Police Department’s K9 Gunner has been awarded a ballistic vest thanks to a nonprofit organization, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., and Lynda Gordon of Coconut Grove, FL provided $1,050.00 for K9 Gunner’s vest. The vest will be embroidered with the sentiment “In loving memory of Corky Gordon”, in honor of the family’s loving pet which passed away.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) charity located in East Taunton, MA whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. Each vest costs $950.00 and has a 5 year warranty. The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four legged K9 Officers. Through private and corporate sponsorships, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 1520 law enforcement dogs in 49 states with protective vests since 2009 at a cost of over $1.4 million dollars.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. announces their signature tank top is now available online for a $20.00 donation at http://www.vik9s.org. Proceeds will provide bullet and stab protective vests, for police dogs actively working without the potentially lifesaving equipment.

The organization orders the U.S. made vests exclusively from distributor Regency Police Supply in Hyannis, MA. Who also does the custom embroidery on the body armor.

New K9 graduates as well as K9’s with expired vests are eligible to participate. The program is open to law enforcement dogs who are US employed, certified and at least 19 months of age.

The Dover Police Department currently has three working K9’s.  Gunner joined the Dover Police Department approximately one year ago and is assigned to Patrolman First Class Joseph Bauer.  K9’s are an important part of the Dover Police Department, assisting in apprehensions, tracking suspects, narcotics searches, and keeping officers safe.  Obtaining this protective vest will ensure the departments investment is protected, but more importantly, to protect the K9 wearing it.  Gunner is an officer like any other officer and places his safety on the line each and every day to protect the citizens of Dover.  This vest will ensure that Gunner is just as safe as any other officer.  The Dover Police Department thanks Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and  Ms. Gordon for her generous donation.  The Dover Police Department and Gunner will work hard to ensure that the memory of your loving pet is not forgotten.

Handgun Found in Stolen Vehicle, Two Arrested 7-20-15

Narrative:

A Sunday afternoon traffic stop led to two arrests after it was learned the vehicle was stolen and there was a handgun inside.  At approximately 1:23PM, Dover Police stopped a 2003 Mazda Protege for a traffic violation (fictitious tags).  As the officer ran the VIN of the vehicle, it was learned that it was stolen out of Milford, DE.  Both driver (Kevin Woods, 29) and passenger (Dontrelle Shields, 22) were taken into custody without incident.  A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a .380 handgun underneath of the passenger seat where Shields was seated.
