Elderly Man Robbed in Parking Lot of The Depot

Narrative: 

The Dover Police Department is investigating a robbery of an 87-year-old man that occurred on Thursday.  At approximately 11:42AM, officers responded to The Depot for a report of a robbery.  Officer learned that a black male suspect pinned the 87-year-old man against his vehicle and forcibly removed an undisclosed amount of cash from the victim.

No injuries were reported.

Cuts-R-Us Burglary

Narrative: 

The Dover Police Department is investigating a burglary at a local business.  Between 5:15PM on March 18th and 9:00AM on March 19th, an unknown suspect forced entry into the business through a rear door.  Once inside, the suspect removed several hair clippers and fled the area.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Dover Police Department at (302)736-7130. Dover Police Launches Online Crime Reporting for Certain Crimes in Response to Covid-19

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Dover Police Department will be employing several strategies to ensure the safety of officers and the citizens we serve.

The department will remain in operation, 24 hours a day as always and will respond to any and every need for service where an officers presence is necessary. We ask that non-emergency (not in progress) calls go to our non emergency number of 302-736-7111.

Depending on the need for service, you will be asked to file your report online at www.doverpolice.org/crimereport or via telephone.  All emergency needs should still go through 9-1-1.  The link to the online crime report site is also available on the menu of the department’s home page: doverpolice.org

The online crime reporting system will be used for crimes/incidents that are not in progress and with no suspect information immediately available.  Examples of these incident include, but are not limited to:
-Thefts 
-Criminal Mischief (vandalism)
-Theft of Services
-Shopliftings without Suspect information
-Others as deemed necessary by a supervisor

Any persons who are displaying any symptoms of sickness are discouraged from entering the lobby of the Dover Police Department. If you do not have an emergency or previous request/appointment from an officer we ask that you avoid our building if possible.

Our response will be constantly re-evaluated and updated as necessary to ensure that no interruption to high quality service occurs during this time. Please remember that we are working in a fluid environment and will have to make real-time decisions quickly to ensure the health, safety and welfare of our officers, civilian staff, and the Dover community.

Once again, the Dover Police Department will continue to provide it’s normal services to the City of Dover and will continue to conduct patrols as normal.  The department is simply trying to minimize contact when services can be provided online or by phone.

 

Three Businesses Affected by Burglary Attempts

Narrative: 

The Dover Police Department is investigating an incident where one store was burglarized and two others were attempted to be broken into.  At 6:46AM officers responded to Weight Watchers at 283 N. DuPont Highway for a reported burglary.  Employees reported to officers that the back storage room was ransacked and that a FitBit was stolen from the business. There was damage to a rear door where the suspect gained entry as well.

Neighboring businesses, Sally Beauty Supply and ATI Physical Therapy, also had damage to the rear doors of their businesses, but the suspect(s) did not make entry.

Traffic Stop Leads to Gun and Drug Possession Charges for Felton Woman 3-16-2020

Narrative: 

The Dover Police Department arrested Takeya Benson (24) on drug and gun charges during a traffic stop on Friday night.  Officers stopped Benson for an equipment violation in the area of Federal Street and East Loockerman Street at approximately 11:53PM.  During the stop, officers detected a strong odor of marijuana and conducted a vehicle search.  As a result of the search, officers located a handgun and 1.7 grams of marijuana inside the vehicle.  Officers also located .5 grams of crack cocaine on Benson’s person. 

Benson was  released on an unsecured bond on the following offenses:
-Carry Concealed Deadly Weapon
-Possession of Firearm by Person Prohibited
-Possession of Marijuana
-Possession of Crack Cocaine
-Drug Paraphernalia
-Traffic Related Offenses

Dover Police Arrest Man in Domestic Related Murder 3-15-2020

Date/Time:  Sunday, March 15th, 2020 at approximately 5:34AM

Location:  Unit Block of Willis Road, Dover, DE

Narrative: 

The Dover Police Department arrested a 24-year-old man for 1st Degree Murder on Sunday for an incident that occurred at a residence in the Unit Block of Willis Road.  The Dover Police Department originally responded to a WAWA store on Forrest Avenue at approximately 5:34AM after being called by a bystander in the store who witnessed a possible domestic situation/suspicious activity between the male suspect, Aaron Garnett Jr., and three children.  When officers contacted Garnett Jr., he provided a false name and different statements as to why he was in the area with the children.  Police then responded to a residence in the Unit Block of Willis Road based on information they obtained from the early investigation.  Upon arrival, officers located Naquita Hill (23) with major injuries to her upper body.  Hill was pronounced deceased shortly after the officers arrived at the residence as a result of those injuries.

Based on the early findings of the investigation, it was determined that Garnett Jr. and Hill were involved in an altercation that resulted in her death as a the result of Garnett Jr. physically assaulting her during that altercation.  

Hill and Garnett Jr. had one child in common together and the other two were being cared for by Hill for another family member.  All three children are now in the care of a trusted relative.
