On Wednesday, November 12th at 1pm, the Dover Police Department held a press event to unveil it’s new medication return box.  The secured box, located in the Dover Police Department lobby, is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the safe and secure disposal of medications no longer needed.  The box was given to the department by the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) as part of a program to combat prescription drug abuse, sponsored by Endo Pharmaceuticals and Zogenix.  Mayor Robin Christiansen (City of Dover Mayor), Chief Paul Bernat (Dover Police Department), and Dr. Karyl Rattay (Director, Delaware Division of Public Health) attended the event and spoke of the importance of getting prescription drugs out of the wrong hands and out of medicine cabinets across the Dover area when no longer needed.  The box allows for a safe and secure drop-off location where any citizen can anonymously drop unused medications for safe and proper disposal.  The Dover Police Department is grateful for their approval by NADDI and looks forward to future success in reducing prescription drug abuse.  The Dover Police Department would also like to thank Mayor Robin Christiansen, Dover City Manager Scott Koenig, and Dr. Karyl Rattay for attending the unveiling of the medication drop box and continued support of Dover Police Department programs aimed at reducing drug abuse.  Please contact Cpl. On Friday, November 07, 2014 at 7:08 P.M. Dover Police responded to the 400 block of E. Water Street for a reported house fire. Further investigation revealed that the resident, a 23 year old male, was in the home when the fire started . He reported to officers that 3 black male suspects ages 18-25 forced the victim inside the residence and demanded money. The victim did not produce any money and the suspects then tied the victim up and set the residence on fire. The suspects fled in a white four door SUV with a sunroof and a luggage rack. The victim, who was not injured,  was then able to escape the residence. The suspects were described as (1) 6’03”, 250 lbs dressed in all black (2) 5’08”, 220-240 lbs with a gray sweatshirt and (3) 5’07”, 150 lbs wearing a green sweatshirt. The fire damage was contained to the kitchen area of the residence but the remainder of the residence sustained smoke damage.  A responding officer from the Dover Police Department attempted to climb a fence to access the rear of the home to ensure all occupants were out of the residence.  The officer was injured, when he slipped and his leg suffered a severe wound from the top of the fence post.  The officer was treated and released for the injury at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital.  The below images are of the suspect vehicle (white SUV), seen fleeing the area after the incident.  The Dover Police Criminal Investigation Unit and the City of Dover Fire Marshals Office are investigating. On Friday, November 07, 2014 at 5;34P.M. Dover Police responded to the east side of Silver Lake Park for a reported robbery. The 55 year old male victim reported to officers that he was riding his bike through the park on his way home when two black male suspects approached him and asked him for a lighter.  The victim stated that he did not have a lighter at which time one suspect knocked him off the bicycle and the second suspect then kneeled on his chest. The first suspect than removed jewelry, an undisclosed amount of cash and the victims wallet from his person. The suspects were described as (1) early 20’s with mid neck length dreadlocks with a brown shirt and khaki pants and (2) mid 20’s with a gray/black striped  sweatshirt and sweatpants. The Dover Police Criminal Investigation Unit responded to handle the investigation. The victim was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, was treated for a bruised chest and released. Due to numerous media inquiries regarding a criminal investigation involving professional race car driver Kurt Busch, the Dover Police Department has issued the following statement:

The Dover Police Department can confirm that an investigation is being conducted based on an allegation of domestic assault that is alleged to have occurred in the City of Dover involving Mr. Busch. These allegations were brought to the Dover Police Department on Wednesday, November 5th at 2:00PM. At this time, the department is still investigating the victim’s claims and will not have any further comment on this matter in order to preserve the integrity of the case. The Dover Police Department will release further information as it becomes available. We appreciate the public’s and media’s patience in this matter and are confident that the department is taking the proper investigative steps to ensure the case is resolved appropriately.
