The Dover Police Department is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Tuesday, October 22nd. At approximately 9:55PM, officers responded to the area of S. DuPont Highway and Webbs Lane and discovered what appeared to be a three vehicle collision with injuries. The road conditions were wet at the time. Further investigation revealed that a 2011 Toyota Sienna, operated by Deborah Young (67) was traveling south on S. DuPont Highway approaching Webbs Lane. A 2019 Kia Soul being operated by Wayne Briney (27) attempted to turn left from the northbound turn lane of S. DuPont Highway onto Webbs Lane. The front of the Toyota Sienna struck the passenger side of the Kia Soul, resulting in both vehicles spinning. The Sienna came to rest facing northbound in the right lane of the southbound lanes. The Kia Soul came to rest along the west edge of the southbound lanes of S. DuPont Highway.
Shortly after the initial accident, Shawn Shannon (25), entered the roadway on foot in an effort to aid those involved in the accident. During this time, a 2007 Jeep Cherokee operated by Michael Baize (56), struck the Toyota Sienna that was still occupied by Deborah Young. The impact caused the Toyota Sienna to cross the southbound lanes of S. DuPont Highway, the grass median, and the northbound lanes of S. DuPont Highway and come to rest along the east edge of the roadway. As a result of this collision, Shawn Shannon was also struck by one of the vehicles.
Deborah Young was transported to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries from the incident.
Shawn Shannon is currently in critical condition at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital.
Both Wayne Briney and Michael Baize were treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing and no determination on any potential charges has been made at this time.
